Black History Month Heroes: Adrian Helmsley from "2012"

In 2012 the earth was saved thanks to a Black geologist
When looking at the work of Roland Emmerich, what is most striking about his film resume is the intense devotion to Black Fictional Heroes. Will Smith as Captain Stephen Hiller in Independence Day flying a F/A-18 Hornet, when less than 2 percent of military aviators are Black was one thing; the most politically incorrect scene in film history was also included in that film when a half-naked African emerged from the bush clutching a spear and celebrating the downing of a 15-mile wide alien spacecraft as if he actually had something to do with disabling to the ship, is another.

That particular scene accompanies the montage at the end of film, showcasing the downed alien ships throughout the world. How on earth an African was able to chuck a spear miles into the atmosphere and bring down an interstellar spacecraft is a hilarious question that Emmerich seemingly leaves unanswered in Independence Day.

Recovering from this racial faux pas, Emmerich would cast Danny Glover in yet another "Black POTUS during the end of the civilized world " that has become the predominate theme in film. 2012 was a visually stunning cinematic experience showcasing implausible action and an over-reliance on destroying popular landmarks that Emmerich's movies have become gratuitously famous for in the process.

2012 is the anti-Knowing and I am Number Four, a film that exists in a parallel universe where Black people fill virtually every important vocational role instead of our reality where Black people enjoy an onus on barbershops and government employment.  This is the beauty of Black Fictional Heroes, as popular culture through the medium of film, television and even pop singers and other entertainers are manufactured and carefully placed in a colorful form of Black product placement to let the viewer know that yes, Black people can be anything they put their mind.

Real-life employment and labor statistics might showcase a paucity of Black people in positions that movies and television routinely casts them in (think computer programmer, scientist, geneticist, inventor, dentist, vet), but this is why behavioral modification techniques and propaganda are so vital to propping up Black Run America (BRA). All Black people come from families as loving as that wonderful Cosby family was in The Cosby Show. Right?

2012 can be boiled down to, what OneSTDV called Hollywood Liberalism Personified:
The picture's main premise is global warming on steroids, as large solar flares are found to be heating the Earth's crust to an unstable level. An Indian physicist, working in conjunction with America's chief geologist Adrian Helmsley, a black guy, makes the discovery. The black American scientist relays this information to his dubious boss, a white man who subsequently represents the moral failings of pragmatic government frugality, and then the black President. A global consortium of nations resolves to save humanity by appropriating funds from rich donors who are offered seats in exchange for their donations. Of course, thisprivate fundraising effort is later criticized by Adrian, the moral compass of the movie, for unfairly limiting occupants to the rich...
After establishing John Cusack, his ex-wife, and their children, the dismantling of Earth's crust begins. I generally love disaster films, but that usually doesn't imply watching billions of people die. This extreme seismic activity that eventually destroys almost all of Earth's landmass is an allusion to the Mayan's 2012 calendar prediction popular amongst the "woo" sect. In a nod to the noble savage meme, several characters mention the foresight of the Mayans and, in doing so, belittle Western technology as practically equivalent to antiquated superstition.
The movie continues in China, where the Chinese have been building ships to save humanity. Cusack is joined by a Russian billionaire who later dies in a horrifically violent manner, justified due to these reprehensible character traits: having a hot young blond as his trophy girlfriend and being a rich capitalist. In between, we get Mr. Miyagi Eastern mystic wisdom while the Vatican disintegrates, killing a bunch of Catholics. (Coincidentally, no Muslim monuments were eviscerated in the film.)
While in China boarding the arks, the black American scientist delivers a "We are the World" speech that inspires all of humanity. At the end of the film, with the natural disasters having extirpated almost all of civilization, one continent stands alone as the new birthplace of humanity: Africa. Yes, the only continent to survive a worldwide flood was Africa (South Africa to be specific!). So with the entirety of civilization destroyed, humanity can now progress into a new dawn free of the restrictions imposed by all those pesky conservative institutions.
Wait a second, a Black geologist? Everything else sounds entirely plausible, but a Black geologist? Here is a list of the 10 vocations with the lowest Black participation:

1.   Artists and related workers—0.8%
2.   Environmental scientists and geoscientists—1.0%
3.   Cost estimators—1.1%
4.   Farmers and ranchers—1.4%
4.   Dentists—1.4%
4.   Surveying and mapping technicians—1.4%
7.   Farm, ranch, and other agricultural managers—1.5%
8.   News analysts, reporters and correspondents—1.8%
9.   Millwrights—2.1%
9.   Miscellaneous physical scientists—2.1%
So what are the positions with the highest Black participation? Find out here.

Black geologists are rare in the field of geoscience; yet like the wine industry, the study of rocks and the ground we walk upon continues unabated.  But a crisis exists, of course:

African American earth scientists ponder strategies to attract more students of color to a field with growing opportunities
Reston, Va. -- Their work is essential to the production and preservation of things we take for granted every day -- resources like water, natural gas, and petroleum. Yet, if you asked the average person what geoscientists do, most would be stumped.
And if you asked the average geoscientist why so few among them are African American, the reaction wouldn't be much different.
Last month, a group of roughly fifty African American geologists, geophysicists, students, and corporate recruiters convened here on the campus of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to discuss the future of their profession and strategies for expanding their numbers. The theme of the seventeenth annual conference of the National Association of Black Geologists and Geophysicists (NABGG) was "Diversity in Geoscience."
"Within five years, approximately 25 percent of our current staff will be eligible for retirement," said Cynthia L. Quarterman, director of the U.S. Department of the Interior's Minerals Management Service, a major federal employer of geoscientists.
"MMS has a five-point strategic plan for diversity," Quarterman adds.
Noting that five different world records for offshore resource production were set on the outer continental shelf in the Gulf of Mexico in the past year, she said that resource production is expected to double there in coming years.

A Black geologist can save the world in 2012, but in reality, a Black student interested in becoming a geologist can scarcely be found. So yes, Black students studying geology are between a rock and hard place (only 373 Black students were studying geology at American universities in 1996 and you can bet that every company that hires geologist for mineral inspection and oil exploration were interested in landing their prized Black employee from this lot) though the National Association of Black Geologists and Geophysicists does have exceptional corporate backing.

The desire to rectify the lack of Black participation in geology (and virtually every hard science) has been an Sisyphean task, though Sisyphus at least got the boulder up the hill before it came crashing down again. This article from 1994 showcases that Black participation in geology shows no signs of ever improving:
Bernard Hubbard, a graduate student in the Department of Geology at the University at Buffalo and one of the relatively few African Americans in the U.S. who is studying geology, has strong advice for inner-city kids.
"Don't fear the professional fields," he advises. "There are more of us going into these fields than you'd ever know. You'd be surprised at the number of people who come from the ghetto who really make it to the top, but you never hear about it. Your people are there!"
While the under-representation of minorities in all the sciences has received much attention lately, many studies and programs focus on biology and chemistry, and other more "popular" sciences. But African Americans are especially under-represented in geology.
The American Geological Institute estimates that out of 26,522 students studying geology at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the U.S., only 362 are black.
The National Association for Black Geologists and Geophysicists estimates that of the 80,000 working geoscientists in the U.S., just 0.4 percent are black.
Thank God for Black History Month Heroes, or else we'd only have Black people playing roles like in Mad Men that more align with the profession that they are found in real life. Here's to you Adrian Helmsley, a Black geologist that we can all be proud of, and who saved the day in 2012.

What's increasingly melancholy though is that the continued usage of the Black Fictional Hero in film doesn't translate to an increased Black participation in that particular vocation in real life.

And thank God for Emmerich, as the mulligan he was offered for the horrid shot of Africans, holding spears and admonishing a downed alien spacecraft as if they had something to do with its defeat was completely forgotten with the ode to Black people that was 2012.

I've seen a number of liberal films, but 2012 was absolutely the "best." It's almost inconceivable how someone could fit so many aspects of liberalism into one film.

I wrote a whole post on this movie after I saw it; '2012' was so racist. I was so fired up.

Whether or not black people proliferate in geophysics, the issue is why did they allow the loser author (played by white John Cusack) save the world instead of the smart minorities? (There was an Indian scientist in the movie as well; he, of course, dies very quickly.)

Dr. Helmsley pretty much worshipped Cusack at the end of the film, acting as if his struggling novel was like the Bible in a new earth.

Very, very racist Hollywood film. This is typical of the blockbuster action flicks. And you people have the nerve to get in an 'uproar' over Thor... When minorities play smart characters, they still aren't good enough to save the planet.

Crazy!

It was hard to watch that rubbish without a barf bag. For his next effort I think the director should simply run a series of flashing signs on the screen like, White man ebil, black man gooood, white man stupid, black man smaaaart, etc.

SBPDL, you periodically post statements declaring that you will increasingly vet comments for civility, etc., you note that many commenters find Desiree irritating and irrational at best, yet you not only continue posting her inanities but now you help her advertise her blog here as well. Yes, she perfectly personifies black intellectual and cultural limitations, but as others have noted, your website is, for many, a refuge from such predations. Most of those who come here hardly need to see her rants to believe in BRA and its insanity. Please, no more.

Desiree, the reason why they let the "loser author" save the day (and I say this without having seen the movie) is because the (mostly White) audience needs somebody to relate to. Most of the audience aren't black scientists, but a lot of them are White family men. The ordinary man being a hero is a popular theme in fiction and real life for that matter.

Billy Blanks said...

Ahh yes those ubiquitous, fake, hollywood black presidents. Oh wait the president happens to be black in real life too! Doh!

And if going by those same stats blacks are twice as likely to work in the physical sciences as they to be artists?

So blacks still are more likely to observe the laws of gravity than to paint, sing, dance or create sculpture?

Does'nt that largely contradict your contentions?

Yeah 2012, the vomit inducing foray into liberal fantasyland where black Americans save the planet. Honestly the movie was so utterly forgettable that I don't remember most of it but I do remember they never showed any moslem monuments being destroyed over fears of moslems rioting since they cannot differentiate fantasy from reality.

Billy,

And just like in the movies with Black presidents, the United States is on the verge disaster.

Oil is at $120/barrel today. Black unemployment shows no signs of abating...

Major Black riot within six months and those leading it will utilize Twitter, Facebook and other social media to organize and galvanize the rioters, just as they do when they organize flash mobs at department stores.

Using this same logic, all football movies should now feature white running backs because Peyton Hillis is white.
I'm confident black people would be comfortable with that, and find it perfectly realistic.

Obviously you don't remember a thing! Because they didn't allow any minorities to save the plant, just the loser white ev'ryman.

@ South East Asian:

Why is that you aren't happy even after all the white liberals potray you in the movies as near √úbermensch and infallible?

What is there to be happy about?

You see, I believe the sky is the limit with blacks and all minorities so casting black people as physicists is not totally crazy (recall: black physicist and NOVA scienceNOW host Neil Degrasse Tyson).

However, it is evident that many people on this thread have not seen the film. It shows that the white ev'ryman saves the day.

And he's a loser; his book fails to sell, yet the minorities quote it at the end like it's the BIBLE.

He saves the day, even when all of the intellectual capabilities are in the hands of these minorities. yet, they are at the behest of this white guy, who is also an unrealistic, sentimental idealist who wants to save everyone.

Of course I was upset. It's ridiculous. I'm surprised you people didn't like the film. The white guy is the hero!

@SBPDL:

Your retort to Billy was really bad. If you are going to make assumptions in your article and someone crunches the data, you should defend it or admit being incorrect.

By the way, how can you sell your book for $23? Isn't it just the same stuff on the blog? Which is free?

I just want to point out that the fools on here debunking Black History Month, and how "proud" and "dignified" blacks are to have a month devoted to them, are only making even more fools out of themselves. Yes, most blacks celebrate Black History Month and enjoy it, I myself do, but in the recess of my mind, I know that it's really a slap to the face.

Yeah, blacks get one month where people can casually read something about a black figure. Yeah, we get one month where people can acknowledge our race, but once February is over, no one gives a crap about taking time to learn about our people, not that the people on here do so anyways.

I could care less about Black History Month. It's an insult, and blacks see that. The only joke, is the fact that the ones on this blog are ridiculing black actors for playing heroes on works of fiction. It's a movie. I and so do a couple of others wonder why do you people have to bring race into movies? Can't you just enjoy it and not bring race into it?

You people say black people play the racist card like natural instict, I'd say you people bring race into the simplest things as if it's programmed into you. I'm sure you people would be upset if you saw a white person playing as black in a chest game.

Dishonest Crusader, I've pointed this out to you before, yet you are still repeating the same improper grammar.

http://www.alyssonfergison.com/couldnt-care-less-or-could-care-less/

Incorrect usage: “I could care less what he thinks…” – meaning one does care and possesses a measurable level of caring from which feeling could be subtracted.
Correct usage: “I couldn’t care less what he thinks…” – meaning one does not care at all and thus it would be impossible to care any less or subtract feeling where none exists.

"And if going by those same stats blacks are twice as likely to work in the physical sciences as they to be artists?"

Knowing that there are numerous black singers, dancers, and rappers, it seems obvious that the term "artist" is being used in a specific context (painting), as opposed to general.

Which renders the above statement nonsensical.

I hate 2012 with the white-hot intensity of a thousand suns. I've made it a life-long habit of suspending disbelief for action, sci-fi, and fantasy films (how else would one get through it and enjoy the films?). However, 2012 is simply one of the worst films ever made, because it had so much money and talent and resources thrown at it, and the results were horrible and poor.

Emmerich must have thought that he'd get away with the cliches he'd used in his previous films, but this time it doesn't work. I was too busy having fun watching INDEPENDENCE DAY to care that two of the heroes were Jewish or Black; the movie was light fun and its inclusiveness simply made good business sense. Furthermore, there doesn't appear to be, to this day, a hint of political bias in the film. Clearly that is not the case with 2012.

Desiree was right; the film is racist, but not for the reasons she articulates. The film is racist because, in an attempt to 'balance the scales' and 'right the injustices of the past', Emmerich decides to make all white characters indifferent or incompetent, while all the minority characters are the true heart and soul of the film; giving the movie a moral compass and conscience it would not have had otherwise.

For example, the impassioned plea from Dr. Adrian Helmsley towards the end of the film to Carl Anheuser to 'let the people in' and 'give them a chance for life' sounds nice and progressive and compassionate, but at the same time the request is emotional and foolish. If the boats are designed to house, let's say, 25,000 people (my estimate), how does allowing an additional 25,000 people into the ark that was only built with provisions, food, medicine, water, and shelter for 25,000 actually HELP THE MATTER? It doesn't help; it hurts. But the film doesn't bother to concentrate on the social ramifications that will occur down the road when those extra 25,000 people are rioting, spreading disease, and there's not enough food, medicine, doctors, etc...to care for and feed all these extra people. If Helmsley had been on board my ship and tried to let these people in I would have personally pulled out a gun and shot him right between the eyes. Another idiotic point the movie tries to make is that rich people were getting to the front of the line to be saved; yet, what good would bribing me with $25 million dollars do when there would be nothing to spend it on after the apocalypse? Money would have no value after 2012, but that doesn't stop Emmerich from trying to score idiotic political points.

'Stuff' posted a link to the YouTube soundtrack for SUNSHINE (John Murphy's Adagio in D-minor; one of my all-time favorite scores), and the link is appropriate. In the movie, 7 astronauts make a realistic, self-sacrificing, one-way journey to the center of the solar system to jump start the Sun; no corners cut...no egos...no political b.s...and, shockingly, no black people. Just 7 astronauts fixated on what it is going to take to save mankind, not on being politically correct.

Great movie. Great soundtrack. Excellent post.

"Yeah, blacks get one month where people can casually read something about a black figure. "

How about this.

Dear blacks, celebrate your OWN history in private and stop thrusting it down our throats. Don't forget, white people in America were the FIRST people on the planet to outlaw slavery. Many whites lost their lives to free the black race to end slavery. Life for blacks is better in America than any place on earth. Show some respect.

You have been sold a bill of goods. White Europeans, not Africans, host the dominant culture in America. You are a minority in a majority white culture. Like it or not. Just as blacks don't want to celebrate and honor white history, whites do not want to celebrate or honor black history. Black people, however, being the minority, should know their place in our collective history. The contributions of blacks to American society are very limited, and so things must be exaggerated and fabricated in order to demonstrate "equality" and make everyone feel warm and fuzzy. It is a sham.

WE ARE NOT ALL THE SAME, nor are we all equal. White history is American history, blacks play a very minor role in this. The importation of an African slave population has been more of a problem to deal with, rather than something wonderful to celebrate.

Blacks continue to try and bust their "black agenda" through at every opportunity. Assimilate. Assimilate. Assimilate. Relax and finally enjoy your majority culture and the fine things it brings to all citizens. That is my advice to you. You will not like America its rule falls into the hands of irresponsible, violent, corrupt blacks.

Anyone who enthusiastically celebrates another race's history is a chump and a sellout. This is what crazy DWLs do, go overboard with the pandering to blacks like MLK. He is not a hero to whites, and should be celebrated by blacks in private. This Black History Month mess really makes me want to vomit. Most pandering DWL whites don't even know their white history, but are falling over themselves to learn about the noble and magical black race. It is shameful, and the REAL slap in the face.

All blacks want is money, and to be included in white culture. Blacks mimic white culture in order to get a financial payoff. Whites know that blacks add nothing of value to society, but continue to pander to blacks because of white guilt.

TMI said...

"Yeah, we get one month where people can acknowledge our race, but once February is over, no one gives a crap about taking time to learn about our people, not that the people on here do so anyways."

Here is a tip for you. Black people are always fucking up everything nice, so white people don't care to know more about them. If you would stop your whiny victimology rant and just listen to how stupid and pitiful you sound. Why are you so reliant on whites to celebrate you and the entire black race???? Why do you think we should want to do this? I don't understand it at all.

Here is what we know about your people:

violent, low IQ, third-world, defiant, anti-intellectual, anti-white, angry, defensive, bloated self-esteem, low-income, "ghetto", underclass, loud, rude, negligent, separatist, criminal, lazy, entitled, self-important, shallow, dishonest, dependent, unwed, illegitimate, full of rage, quick to snap, impulsive, irresponsible, suspicious, and mischievous.

What more is there to know? The multiculturalists give us false black traits such as "warm, colorful, vibrant, verbose, rich, full, diverse and proud", This only serves to shine a more positive light on blacks and try to improve their reputation in America by using propaganda. It is misleading and does not work. I believe what black people DO not what they SAY. There is a difference. You are drunk on your own Kool-Aid.

Most blacks do not care about black history or ANY history for that matter. Whites are not stupid. No one is stopping you from "celebrating" your "black history" every day of the year. If you want to promote blacks, do it with your own money on your own time.

Please, do not speak anymore. And when you decide to do it again, please make sure you have taken non-survey history courses, ie. the ones that are in depth and require entry into a four-year university. High school history will not do it, esp. the way our education system is. This is the folly of those with just general knowledge of the United States. The "black question" was one of the biggest issues throughout American history, and blacks had a major role in the US's development, regardless of how you feel about them now.

TMI said again:

and then:
Anyone who enthusiastically celebrates another race's history is a chump and a sellout.

I am assuming "TMI" failed to notice her own contradiction. She advocates assimilation for blacks and that they should abandon "Black History Months" and other multicultural displays yet she then makes a statement that can also be construed as "if a black assimilates, they are terrible chumps/sellouts".

I don't think she means this - as it would only serve to embolden blacks in advancing a pro-black agenda instead of following her plan of assimilation - but the lack of self-reflection and rational thought on her part led to this humorous gaffe.

She then says:
violent, low IQ, third-world, defiant, anti-intellectual, anti-white, angry, defensive, bloated self-esteem, low-income, "ghetto", underclass, loud, rude, negligent, separatist, criminal, lazy, entitled, self-important, shallow, dishonest, dependent, unwed, illegitimate, full of rage, quick to snap, impulsive, irresponsible, suspicious, and mischievous.

It almost goes without saying that everyone knows blacks who do not fit those descriptors and whites who do. That's a boring argument, sure, but her kind of unrealistic black-or-white dichotomies prevent real, intelligent discussions on race relations in the US. It's histrionic and it's brainless shit.

There are tons of sites discussing race but this one at least is a bit less conspicuous in terms of hate speech. Hopefully it can stay that way. That would mean ebbing the flow of "TMI" harpies. This site must also have blacks. Discussion of blacks and black behavior is pointless without their say.

I disagree with "Sheila". If she wants an "oasis" from blacks, she shouldn't frequent a site that discusses them. I am sure she failed to see the irony in her own comment...
